News and reflections on social networking, marketing, project management and other applications that can help connect people and businesses.

Three bullets   New Upgrade
After 3 months of hard work, we released a new upgrade that we hope you'll enjoy. This upgrade is a bit different because the changes are not immediately noticeable. However, as you go through the screens you will realize how deep and complex the modifications are: Daikana is a now a fully-fledged business network and is centered around the concept of "Workspace". You have your Personal Workspace where you can interact with your contacts, your Organization Workspaces where you can interact with businesses either as an employee or a customer and your Project Workspaces where you can work and collaborate on projects with multiple businesses at the same time. The goal of Daikana is now more than ever to connect people and businesses.

If you want to know more, you can just check out our latest "slideshow" that highlights some of the new functionalities by clicking here.

Three bullets   Meeting with Irish entrepreneurs
I went out Monday evening to meet with a group of entrepreneurs from Ireland in downtown San Francisco – I had heard about it from Robert Scoble. They were “touring” the area to meet with investors and to exchange ideas with other entrepreneurs. Apparently investors are risk-averse in Ireland, especially when it comes to new technologies. I had a really good time and I can only recommend the following sites:

Bench’d
Toddle
Tourist Republic

Good luck to them!

Three bullets   Google OpenSocial
Obviously I can’t speak for Microsoft or Facebook but generally people love Google. What strikes me the most about them is their creativity; the ability to create original applications revolving around their core business: search and advertising. Google maps, Gmail, Products etc… are just so many different ways to reuse the same model (search+advertising+application) and of course build new revenue channels. They are still the darlings of the Silicon Valley and the world holds its breath with each new product release.

That was the case about a month ago when they unveiled OpenSocial, a new standard allowing social networks to share information about users on the network, their friends and their actions to third-party applications. Obviously I thought that Daikana would be the perfect site to implement this new standard (we always need more calendars and reports, especially when they’re developed by somebody else), but after reading the specifications I reconsidered for the following reasons:
Despite the hoopla, OpenSocial is still in its infancy. There isn’t much documentation or code if you are a network wanting to implement the standard.
The standard is and needs to be very generic to work on as many social networks as possible, which does not work well for a network such as Daikana where the data structure is quite complex and specific.
There have been reports of hacking of some OpenSocial applications. Of course, this is not very important on social networking sites but on Daikana security is paramount to safeguard your data.

I have no doubt that OpenSocial will keep improving and at some point we may implement it. This is Google after all and I love it.

Three bullets   New User Interface
Just 10 days after releasing the Daikana Business Matching we did it again with a brand new user interface, which I think will be much easier on the eyes (best viewed in 1024*768 and above). It's also more functional; the pictures are smaller in size, between 1/2 and 2/3 of the original size, so the screens will load faster and our friends using Safari will now be able to connect to Daikana without any issues. Daikana was thoroughly tested with the following browsers:
Internet Explorer 7
Firefox 2
Netscape 9
Safari 3 (which is currently in Public Beta)

Let me know what you think; your feedback is appreciated!

Note: a bug was reported in the Daikana Business Matching emails sent out. The top portion “The following businesses may be interested in the Products & Services that you offer:” and the bottom portion “The following businesses may be offering the Products & Services that you need:” are switched. We're working on fixing it as soon as possible.

Three bullets   Daikana Business Matching released
For our first blog entry (it's about time) I'd like to announce that we released Daikana Business Matching: You now have the ability to search for the best prospective customers based on the products & services offered by your business. By the same token, you can search for the best suppliers offering the products & services that your business requires.

You can also opt to receive a recurring email listing the best prospective customers & suppliers that have been automatically matched with your business. Click on the thumbnail to see what the email looks like:

That does sound like what some dating sites are doing, and that's because we're all about creating great relationships between businesses!

We are also working on a adding this blog functionality to Daikana. You will soon be able to publish blogs:
For your organization to communicate news, updates and promote your business – just like what you are reading right now!
For your users, so you and your employees can express themselves. You will have the ability to restrict this blog feature to some users using responsibilities (for example to your Executives).
For your projects to help you communicates news and progress to your team (only team members will have access to the project blog).

So just great news! Don’t hesitate to send me a message if you have any questions.
